Backyard Composting

- We prefer the backyard composting method- and we even offer FREE classes!
Backyard Composting Classes
Backyard composting classes are available free of charge to Lexington County residents. Courses on Backyard Composting, and Building your own Rain Barrel are called Backyard Benefits Classes and are offered three times per year on Saturdays and can be offered on request as staff availability allows. The course fees from the Backyard Benefits courses are to take home a rain barrel after you complete building one.

May 18, 2024- Learn how to utilize and attract pollinators, best tips and tricks for backyard composting, build a rain barrel and learn more about how you can get benefits in your own backyard! Tickets are required and space is limited.

BUY a Backyard Compost Bin
$65 each- Available for pickup Monday-Saturday 7:00 A.M.- 4:00 P.M.
- Located at 429 Landfill Lane, Lexington, SC 29073
- Stop at the scale at the Edmund Landfill to pay and then pull into the parking lot to load the bin.
- The bins have an 80 gallon capacity and are approximately 3' tall x 3' wide. They come in three pieces and fit easily into any vehicle for transportation and are easy to assemble.

What are you doing with your raw fruit and vegetable scraps? Your yard debris? Instead of throwing these items in the trash, consider composting them.
You've probably heard about it, but what exactly is composting? Composting is nature's way of recycling. Microorganisms break down organic material - like yard trimmings and food scraps - into a dark, crumbly, soil-like material that can be used for gardening and landscaping.
Your compost is free material for fertilizing your garden and lawn. It will improve your soil quality, retain water and improve water drainage.

If you purchase a bin from Lexington County, you may be eligible for a counter compost bin and thermometer while supplies last.
